Emotions - brief, specific, multidimensional responses to challenges or opportunities that are important to our goals (especially social goals) In general, emotions motivate and guide appropriate goal-directed behaviour that supports stronger and smoother social relationships. Inspires us to take action and reduce suffering of others. Different kinds of smiles - paul ekman: differentiates between felt and false smiles. Felt smiles accompany our experience of positive emotions. Lasts a few seconds; lip corners turn up equally on both sides. American students: students had to match one of the 6 emotions to the appropriate pose, with the exception of fear, accuracy rates were above-average. Lawyers are often concerned with the defendants showing remorse in the courtroom - an emotion related to embarrassment: defendants displaying remorse are judged less harshly. Hypothesis 3 - emotional expression among blind people. Studies of blind individuals have shown their expressions of emotion are very similar to those of sighted people.
