PSYC 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 21: Chorda Tympani, Visual Cortex, Auditory Cortex
Document Summary
Psyc 212 lecture 21 april 5th. Recap cross-modal plasticity (1) the visual cortex reorganizes itself following visual deprivation. This is what we observed in the case of the rewired hamsters. At the brain level, there are two main types of mechanisms that can underlie cross-modal plasticity. (2) Feedforward pathway between primary cortices the primary auditory cortex could send information to the visual cortex, allowing one to echolocate or something like this. In this case, the parietal lobe (cid:272)ould take so(cid:373)e of the fu(cid:374)(cid:272)tio(cid:374)s of the pri(cid:373)ar(cid:455) (cid:448)isual (cid:272)orte(cid:454) that"s depri(cid:448)ed of (cid:448)isual information. Taste and flavour: taste: sensations evoked by solutions in the mouth that contact the receptors on the tongue and the roof of the mouth. We need both the gustatory and olfaction system to really taste things. Pure taste is what you taste when you have your nose pinched. Flavour: the combination of true taste (sweet, salty, sour, bitter) and retronasal olfaction.
