Ex: staining w/ cytochrome oxidase stain v1 = blobs / stain v2 = stripes. Color info = segregated from retina to v1 but. Tendency of a surface to appear same color under fairly wide range of illuminants. Complex process probably in v4 to know what color the surface really is. We must discount the illuminant & determine the true color of a surface *regardless of how it appears. For same surface the pattern of activation of s-m-l cones can vary. Ex: surface in world reflects diff percentages of diff wavelengths: percentage of light reflected = same surface reflect purple, energy of light under diff lighting conditions. *yellowish sunlight & bluish skylight composed of diff mixtures of wavelengths. Produce 2 diff sets of 3 cone responses from same surface. Cones activated by illuminant spectrum get tired . *cones constantly activated = so adapted to subtract illuminant to give color of surface.
