PSYC 211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Microelectrode, C-Fos, 5-Ht Receptor
Document Summary
Lecture #3 finishing up: most neurotransmitters are made from amino acids. Synthesized in the axon terminal, packaged into vesicles and released into the synaptic cleft. If a precursor to a neurotransmitter is prescribed, it is considered as an agonist. Botox blocks acetylcholine receptors, causing muscle paralysis. Neostigmine inhibits the protein that breaks down acetylcholine, causing it to hang around in synapses for a longer period of time: catcecholamine signal affecting drugs: Cocaine and ritalin are drugs that inhibit the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine by blocking their synaptic transporters; this also occurs with tylenol with cannabinoid reuptake transporters. Adderall and crystal meth reverse catecholamine transporters causing catecholamine neurotransmitters to flow directly out of the presynaptic terminal (no vesicle packaging). Ecstasy does the same thing with all monoamine transporters. Antipsychotics bind to the dopamine receptor and block it, used often for psychosis related diseases (schizophrenia) Chapter 5: methods & strategies of research: computerised tomography (c. t.
