Document Summary

Central nervous system: comprises the brain and the spinal cord. Periphernal nervous system: consists of everything outside of brain and spinal cord. Afferent nervers: carry sensory signals from eyes, ears to cns. Carry motor signals from cns to skeletal muscles. Golgi (golgi-italian who used a staining technique which stains nerve cells to follow the entire cell) Neuron: basic information processing unit (receive info, transmit info) Cell body: metabolic center (soma): contains the nucleus and provides life process. Dendrites: tree life extension from the soma and receive info from other cells. Axon: info travels through and carries info form the soma to the terminal buttons at the end of the axon. Axon carries the action potential (axon is insulated with a fatty substance- myelin. Myelin sheath: speads up transmission and prevents messages from spreading) Multipolar: most common type (has one axon and its attached to the soma)(intergrate lots of info at the same time)(one process empinating form the soma)
