POLI 412 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Visible Minority, Party System
Document Summary
Lecture 5 - topic 4: visible minority voters: Immigrants learn from exposure to new poli system. The more exposed they are, the more opportunities they have to learn, the more poli engaged they will be. The longer immigrants have lived in canada, the more poli active they will be. Problem: treats newcomers as if they were blank slates. But, this is not the case for immigrants who arrive as adults. Most have had experiences with politics in their country of origin. The longer an immigrant from a non-democratic country has lived in the host country, the more likely they are to develop a party id. The party id often reflects a judgement on the parties over a period of time. Gradually accumulating more and more judgements about the parties, until they come to the conclusion of their party id. Immigrants are able to draw on past experiences with politics in their country of origin.
