Topic 6: territorial cleavages ii: does community type matter, what explains the differences btwn communities, research has focused on urban/rural divide. Found that urban individuals has less traditional views. Attributed this to the fact that it was easier, in a big city, to create an unconventional sub-culture. Because of social networks, they can link you up with more like-minded ppl. They were no more traditional than those who lived in towns, suburbs, etc. It was only those who lived in big cities that had less traditional views. "intolerant, rural hick" is a strawman: walks reading. Argue that the urban/rural cleavage is giving in to a new cleavage. Those who live in suburbs surrounding big cities, and those who live in big cities themselves. Looked at data from 1965, 1984, and 2000 election studies. Comparing across time to see if cleavage emerged. Interested in differences in party preferences, and differences in poli values.
