Often, media presents politics within these terms, so if you do not understand them, it may limit your ability to participate in politics. If canadian"s do think about politics in these ways, there is a possibility of class politics. Class cleavages may be good, because it would help to counter linguistic and regional cleavages. This if often addressed by asking if canadians can understand the left- right terminology. Assumption being that you have a set of beliefs that go together - "ideological constraints" together - "ideological constraints" Presumed to be irrational to put so left ideas with some right ideas. This has become the dominant approach because of anomalies that were found in initial studies. Ppl were asked to place each party in a left-right scale. And asked to place their ideal party along the scale.
