The immediate post colonial years in the middle east saw a number of middle east monarchies fail. This pattern of them failing was the general one in the developing world. Huntington"s kings dilemma, it is that as a hereditary system of governance, monarchy has a different time accommodating new elites, and yet modernization and social mobilization tends to generates new elites, the growth of the business class. Monarchy failed because they couldn"t expand the political elite. Most monarchies in the world are ceremonial, but in the middle east they are absolute. Of the ten absolute monarchies surviving in the world, 80% are found in the middle east. It"s a puzzle why the middle east has so many monarchies that survived decades of post-colonial era. Monarchies have strong traditional roots, traditional and culture, that is why they survive. They seek to portray themselves as authentically traditional, the moroccan one dates back centuries.
