Intl relations: study of interactions among various actors who participate in international affairs, including political states, but also non-governmental organizations and individuals. Peace of westphalia - 1848: birth of modern international relations. Pre-westphalian world: beginning 27 bc - 476 ad. Middle ages: by year 400 roman empire began to disintegrate. Other challenging authorities began to emerge throughout roman empire and began to take hold: religious authority became centralized. Reach 5th century - political authority loses power, religious authority remains centralized. Pope existed with feudal lords after emperor fell. Lutheranism, calvinism, etc. take over catholicism: kingdoms consolidate, thirty years war -1618. Catholics vs protestants trying to control regions of holy roman empire. No rulers wanted to see this in the future. Peace of westphalia (1648) - solution from kings to prevent another thirty years war. Clear boundaries within which one ruler has exclusive jurisdiction. Pope has no authority within any region.
