Reforming elite now has a stake in change and will give up a great deal. Eventually reform faction loses ability to credibly threaten domestic opposition organized in civil society. There are forms of regimes not strictly authoritarian/democratic. We don"t fully understand how they work or are stable. One other type find in the reading: transition paradigm being criticized. Any move away from dictatorial rule is a shift to democracy. Once you move away from authoritarian rule there is a path with a set: opening, breakthrough to democracy, democratic consolidation.
