PHIL 242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: If And Only If, Biopower, Pseudohermaphroditism
Document Summary
Uses of terminology: iff = if and only if. Haslanger"s approach: observation is not enough; we are using the analytical approach to make changes in certain categories/concepts we can"t abolish, we revise definitions. Feminism exists between continental and analytic traditions of philosophy. Continental (french/german) is called this way in contrast to anglo-american tradition. Analytic is more logical/technical; info presented in a way that every premise is going to push the conclusion; this falls under analytic. Feminism continues to go back to asking what is a woman? . Revisionist and abolitionist approaches towards race and gender exist. Abolitionist: eliminate hierarchy/bias (on paper), allows for fluidity, advance knowledge, increase tolerance of deviation. Revisionism (revise terms): advance knowledge, reclaiming power of self- definition, realistic/practical, proliferation of categories, maintain benefits of identity categories. Terminology matters because it is how we construct our world; the stories we tell about lives makes a difference to how those lives are lived.
