Effects of thyroid hormones on basal metabolic rate. Increased calorigenesis or basal metabolic rate (bmr: bmr: rate at which organism burns up fuel stores to produce energy as heat or calories. Increased by t3 and t4 --increase breakdown of carbs, lipids and proteins. If doesn"t then probably other process with receptors. Charact: more common in women, 40-60 years old. Thyroiditis: destruction by antibodies against thyroid gland"s cellular components, aka hashimoto"s disease, more common in women (3) non-toxic goitre, aka goitrous hypothyroidism, blockage in a step of t3/t4 synthesis. Increase in size of thyroid gland: thyroid dysfunction, cretinism: short, nontoxic goiter. If not treated early, growth retardation (dwarfism) and mental retardation - Cretinism: synthesis of, synthesis of little or no thyroid stimulating hormone (tsh) little or no thyrotropin releasing hormone (trh, absence or incomplete development of thyroid gland at birth, child normal size at birth since fetus uses mother"s.
