PHGY 209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 35: Non-Rapid Eye Movement Sleep, Cerebral Cortex, Grey Matter
Document Summary
Consciousness: state of consciousness level of arousal awake asleep etc. measured by behavior and brain activity, conscious experience: thoughts, feelings, desires, ideas etc, eeg measures brain activity surface electrodes on scalp, near surface of brain, or gray matter of cerebral cortex. The eeg has amplitude and frequency, frequency is related to levels of responsiveness and amplitude is related to synchronous neural activity: eegs reflect mental states o alpha rhythm slow frequencies when you"re relaxed with eyes closed o beta rhythm alert fast frequencies, stages of sleep o an eeg is highly linked to sleep patterns. Your cycle of rem becomes progressively larger, but this changes as you get older o rem0 increased eye movement, inhibition of skeletal muscles (but twitching can occur), heart rate and respiration o sleep apnea sudden reduction in respiration leads to other problems such as cardiovascular: state of consciousness o we are naturally asleep in a rhythm called the circadian rhythm.
