PHGY 209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Muscle Fatigue, Myosin Light-Chain Kinase, Rigor Mortis
Document Summary
Fatigue protects muscle from damage because if atp is completely depleted remember the myosin head gets locked into the action filaments and it becomes rigid and stuck like in rigor mortis= don"t want. This so we have protective mechanisms related to muscle fatigue. It is not caused by depletion of atp. A number of complex and incompletely understood cellular mechanisms are responsible for muscle fatigue. 2. for low intensity long duration activity, depletion of glycogen may be important: ex: jogging for 10 miles at a constant pace slow oxidative fibers fatigue. Process is properly understood but is related to the processes inside the fiber that supply a continuous supply of atp to the muscle fiber. Muscle response to exercise: changes in muscle physiology depend on the type of exercise. So, body builders don"t get more production of the muscle fiber itself, it"s the increase production of myofibrils that increases the muscle mass.
