Links all processing systems together to make sense of things. Brain is part of a system: central nervous system makes up a part. Spinal cord highway of processing information (relaying up to brain and down to periphery of body) and mediates automated activities (ex. walking) Afferent fibers or sensory neurons bring information from periphery to spinal cord (ex. skin sensations) ***exam: know the distinction between cns & pns. Pns: is everything else; all the nerves carrying information to the cns & all the information from the cns out to the organs, muscles. 2 special properties of neurons: neurons are electrical cells (all cells are electrical but in neurons they are very specialized).
