PHGY 209 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Viscosity, Folic Acid, Kidney Disease
Document Summary
Acts on the commited stem cell: stimulates proliferation, accelerates maturation. Testosterone: increases the release of erythropoietin, sensitivity of rbc precursors to erythropoietin. Life span is about 120 days: each rbc travels about 300 miles. Removed by highly phagocytic cells known as macrophages: inside are many lysosomes and digestive enzymes, hemoglobin is released. Stored in liver spleen, gut, ferritin storage. Maybe carried directly to bone marrow to be reutilized: heme broken up. Picked up by liver, and into bile. If higher it may be deposited in other places. Juandice (icterus: depositied in the white of the eyes, makes it look yellow. May develop in: liver disease, excerssive hemolysis. Liver is deseased: common bile duct obstruction. Normal dynamics for rbcs: produced and will be destroyed. Consider the hematocrit measures: percentage of rbc relative to total blood volume (45% regular male) Could be dehydration also: not an absolute interpretation. Greater than 18g% hb: normal 16g% Greater than 6e6 rbc/ul: normal 5-5. 5e6 rbc/ul.
