What is anxiety: adaptive, pathological, anticipatory. Main types of anxiety disorder: generalized anxiety disorder (gad) Lifetime prevalence of 5: panic disorder, phobias. Generalized anxiety disorder: constant worry, relapse if stop treatment, muscle tension, autonomic arousal, vigilance, drugs treat the symptoms, not the underlying disorder. Panic disorder: episodic, recurrent, brief (a few minutes, extreme fear and stress symptoms. Drug treatments: generalized anxiety disorder (gad) Buspirone (5ht1a partial agonist: panic disorder. Specific phobias - no drugs (psychological: drugs are not a cure! Phar 301: comorbidity with major depression disorders. 2/5 gad patients also have another anxiety disorder. 2/5 gad patients also have major depression: antidepressants are a good treatment; they work even if you"re not depressed. Who gets gad: women > men (twice as common, civilian trauma triggers it. For a millenia, the treatment for anxiety was alcohol. In the 1900s, barbiturates were the drugs used. In 1955, a drug called meprobamate was an improvement from barbiturates.
