Phar 300 lecture 23 drug development 2. This lecture is continuation of drug development. The field that develops new compounds by helping us discover and optimize leads. Lead discovery is done by testing 1000s of compounds to find the lead compound. This is the compound that looks like it will be most effective. Lead optimization is a process by which chemical variations of this lead will be made. This is done in order to find the most effective candidate. Classical synthesis components of a compound will be put together to make a larger compound. Thousands of compounds can be made, each with slight differences. The different parts that make up a molecule are combined in various ways. This will give many products, which will be different but share fundamental properties. These properties allow the compound to block an enzyme or receptor. Once these compounds are created = high throughput screening.
