NUTR 512 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Ice Cream Headache, Hyponatremia, Carbonation
Document Summary
Energy expenditure and macronutrient metabolism in physically active adults. Objectives: beginning exercise in a euhydrated state, rehydration during + after exercise, replace electrolytes lost: Moderate dehydration (between 3 and 5% of body weight: significant decrease of extracellular fluid volume, decrease in blood volume and cardiac output, decreased blood pressure. Less blood going to the muscle, we have a restriction so we will have less capacity to carry oxygen and therefore perform the exercise. Also, less blood in my skin, less capacity to sweat, which decreases my capacity to lose the heat from the exercise: decreased blood flow for heat transfer. Increased body temperature (40 to 41 c : chance of overheating, cognitive function. Severe dehydration: higher than >5% bm: risk of heat illness: heat cramps, heat syncope, heat exhaustion, heatstroke, work capacity significantly decrease, vertigo, spasms, difficulty breathing, body temperature can exceed 41 c , shivering, cardiac fibrillation, stroke.
