Aleatoric music, electronic music, and minimalism lecture notes. Briten borrowed from two main people: direct quotaion of musical lines, flow my tears , at the end of the renaissance era. While europe was rebuilding ater ww2, america emerged as a major cultural force. Many european composers and musicians emigrated to america (eg. stravinsky, America (and allies) vs. ussr and eastern bloc. No full-scale armed combat but constant threat of nuclear war: arms race, stockpiling of weapons. Complete abandonment of tradiion: very divorced from romanic music but the importance of forms and core values sill present in schoenberg, tried to get rid of expressionism. Atempt to eface the arist"s aitudes and intenions by leaving arisic decisions to : mathemaics (eg. total serialism), determined how music would sound, chance (eg. cage), the sound would depend on the performer or by random. Rit between arist and society meant that new models of patronage were required.
