The Beatles 1965–1967
Beatles: With a little help from friends
-Shift from rock n roll to rock music
-Disassociated from low brow cultural baggage of rock n roll
Dylan and the Beatles meet in NYC, August 1964
-Bob Dylan supposedly introduced weed to the Beatles for the first time
-Influenced each other greatly
-Impacted Bob Dylan as seen in Bringing it All Back Home (Folk Rock)
-Bob Dylan’s lyrics are becoming more surrealist, rather than the outwardly political that
was seen in idealist folk values
-Double avant-garde: union of experiments with images and experiments with new sounds
of electricity — art for arts sake
The Byrds — More Folk Rock
-Formed late 64’ by three LA folk singers
-Covered Mr. Tambourine Man — closed the gap between Dylan and the Beatles learning
toward each other in concept
-Beatlesque: instrumental sounds like Ticket to Ride
-Similar vocal style, use of various singers and vocal harmonies
-Similar guitar sound — electric 12-string guitar influenced by the Beatles (at the
beginning)
-Dylan influence: Dylan’s melody and lyrics
-The Byrds first single — record label wouldn’t let them all play on the record
1965 — 1966: Year of Folk Rock due to Dylan, Beatles and The Byrds
Rubber Soul (1965) — The Beatles
-A combination of subtle instrumentation with introspection of lyric content and an artsy record
cover
-Similar to Dylan — exhibits the influence Dylan had on the Beatles
-Studio possibilities: overdubbed — in the early 60s, all the recordings were live to take.
With A Hard Days Night there was an expansion into overdubbing, increasing the creativity
possibilities
“Norwegian Wood” — Rubber Soul
-What is the song about?
-A story about a singer and “she”
-Speaking about how beautiful her house is — Norwegian wood
-No sex or cuddling — disappointed
-Contrast between working class and artist — artist doesn’t have work in the morning but
the woman who has a solid job does
-Not about a lot, but the song requires interpretation to fully understand it
-What is the instrumentation?
-First use of sitar by the Beatles (indian classical instrument) — producing a twang sound
-Acoustic guitar, vocals
-What is the form? Verse/ chorus?
