MIMM 211 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Mitochondrion, Prokaryote, Chloroplast
Document Summary
Tiny eukaryote: nanochlorum eukaryotum (a green alga) We will look at the morphology of the prokaryotic cell. Not all cells have all of these characteristics. This is a general schematic of everything you can find on a bacterial cell. This is a bacillus (rod-like shaped) bacterium. The plasma membrane is a mechanical barrier between the inside of the cell and the outside world: this is where the nutrients get imported and all of the waste gets excreted. It is very hydrophobic (unlike the inside of the cell which is hydrophilic) and therefore, it requires many transporters to help things move across it. Not shown in the schematic but if it was a gram -ve cell, there would be another layer, another membrane on the outside of the cell wall. Capsules can be made of proteins or different kinds of sugars.
