Document Summary

Chapter 3 metals part b: alloys & phases, solid solution alloys, alloy phase diagrams a. Isomorphous system: phase diagram rules, solid solubility limit, eutectic system, phase diagrams with intermediate phases. Metallic alloys, solid solution alloy (cid:1)a pure metal consisting of only one type of atom is difficult to get; impurity or foreign atoms will always be present. This is the basis of metallic alloys. (cid:1)a metallic alloy is mixture of elements where at least one of the elements is metallic and the bonding in the alloy is metallic bonding. Solid solution alloy: the simplest alloy is a solid solution alloy where foreign atoms (the solute) occupies substitutional or interstitial positions in the crystal structure. Substitutional solute: when the atom of the foreign element substitutes a lattice position of the host metal. Interstitial solute: when the foreign atom is small and can occupy interstitial positions between the lattice atoms of the host metal.
