Document Summary

In today"s lecture we rst discuss some applications of first order equations and then study elemen- tary numerical methods to solve first order di erential equations. Disclaimer: this section was not explictly covered in lecture. I suggest having a look at some application problems if you are interested. First order equations arise in many applications some of which we discussed in previous lectures. In particular we have talked about chemical reaction/mixing problems and population dynamic models. Other applications of rst order equations include motion of a particle and heat transfer. Newton"s law for a falling body on the surface of the earth. Using conservation of energy derive the equations of motion for free fall on the surface of the earth with no air reistance / drag. We nd that the equations of motion should be, y (t) = g (1. 1) where g represents the constant value 9. 8 meters per second squared.
