Statics (examples from text book page 161 table 6. 1) There looks to be an inverse linear correlation of h dropping decreases once you advance with social class. Table 6. 2 shows that the correlation is meaningless because the range is so huge. Missing the number of people in each group and the measure of variability (standard deviation) Method: interviews formal situation: thematic apperception test informal situation: students were asked to discuss recent activities younger children were told to make up stories older children were administered interviews and questions. We do not have any data to evaluate the study. Problem with child language is that it would change as the children got older. We can distinguish standard form and non-standard (but not everyone will want to use the standard form) People who speak the standard form are perceived to be upper class while others will not use standard form because they do not want to be associated with being stiff/posh.
