People used to say nazism was just to germany alone. Others say it was something sudden and surprising. What historians have discovered is that although the nazi regime insisted it was revolutionary- it masked a greater continuity of practices and ideas from the past. Not just a continuity with german history but europe as a continent in its entirety. The nazi concepts of community and difference borrowed from a rich history of modern. How states in western europe gradually began to extend more rights to jews as citizens. The term used granting jews these rights was emancipation. And we followed jews in other places where they began to shed the distinct characteristics that made them jew - culture, clothes, food, etc. These jews in western europe were enthralled with the prospect that they could belong in this new civic nationalism loyalty over to owns country over ones group or other interests.
