An awareness of all of these should be required to treat both: Individuals: biomedical approach, the patient-practictioner relationship: diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation; clinical preventive practices. Populations: public health and population health approach. Public health: the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts of society (acheson report, 1988). Achievements include: vaccination, motor vehicle safety, safer workplaces, control of infectious diseases, reduce coronary heart disease deaths, safer healthier foods, maternal child health, family planning, fluoridation, recognition of tobacco hazards. Traditional roles: prevent epidemics, protect the population, monitor population health status, mobilize community action, emergency response to disasters, ensure access to quality care, outreach for high risk groups, lead policy and planning.
