Document Summary
Mary ellen turpel-lafond--bc rep for children and youth. Sppts children/fams who need help dealing w child welfare syst, generally helps to. Looking into death of indg girl, paige, @ 19. At 16, eventually moved w/ mom to vancouver, spent a lot of time on street. Social services knew abt her/her condition, did nothing. And once she aged out (19 yrs) any semblance of aid ended. No one has been held accountable for paige"s death, despite the fact that there is a law against not reporting child neglect. No govt inquiry bc paige was an adult when she died. Paige faced systemic racism--indg girls/women written off. Systemic racism causes indg girls/women to end up in neighborhoods like the downtown eastside. Can see societal trend in paige"s family. Mother--had paige at 16, sexually abused, alcoholic. Not in a position to raise paige, but not her fault, not a bad person. Involved in 40 diff police files, spent time in jail cells.
