preceded by a cause
An example: digestion
• The act of digesting is performed by the faculty of alteration/assimilation
• This faculty is in all parts of the body and attracts and processes the
nutriment it needs
• To maintain contact it requires a retentive faculty
• Retentive faculty is demonstrated through visible action of large retentive
organs, stomach and uterus
• When the uterus has finished its work of forming the baby, it stops the
retentive faculty and activates the expulsive faculty
