A factor in this development was christianity and that christian leaders claimed sol to supernatural power. Everything that was good and happened through supernatural means happened through. Christian god or his agents - the saints or early christian leaders. Anything done through any other agencies was bad and done by demons. Greater simplicity to a degree about the supernatural world. Christians tended to share to a degree the same world view as their pagan predecessor contemporaries and felt that there really were supernatural forces in the world. They needed to divide this into the good forces and the demons. Christian leaders recognized people did expect things from supernatural forces/beings.
