Document Summary

Louis xv plans invasion of england in 1744, but french fleet is incapacitated so can"t go. 1745 pretender prince charles carries on with invasion anyways, raises flag in glenfinnan, outside port william. This jacobite rebellion supported by only a few highland chiefs. Captures perth, then edinburgh, wins battle at prestonpans. Jacobites then enter england, are able to evade armies and get as far as darby. Only possible because most of english army is abroad in europe. Further, lack of english support and no incoming french troops. Could have been different if made it to london (150 miles) but instead returned to scotland. Malnourished, exhausted 5,000 jacobites defeated by 9,000 fresh troops under command of lord cumberland. Cumberland then goes on campaign of total war reprisal. Prince charles evades capture for 5 months b4 leaving for france. Conclusion: people have too much to lose by supporting jacobites, consolidation of england, beginning of the end for highland society.
