To win war it would be a bloody fight because southerners wouldn"t give up way of life easily: made them suspect by commanders for having these unorthodox views and aggressive tactics. Grant had a reputation for being rough, un-gentlemanly, drinker, made him seem like a regular, enlisted guy instead of part of the elite, officer class. Views on the war who affected his fighting, as did his drinking. Sherman was thought to be a little crazy, emotional crisis early on in the war, at the thought of what was in front of his, went home and came back into the service. Feb, 1862 takes boats into ohio river and down tennessee river (turtle boats, low effective weapons) Fort henry fell on feb 6 relatively easy fighting. Stirs up concern among the confederate forces fort that commands tennessee river is now in.
