We begin from the aftermath of the battle of midway in 1942, which was a stunning victory over the. Japanese fleet, leaving them floundering and allowing the allies (esp. Americans) to go over to the offensive in 1942. Still, the japanese home islands were 2,000 miles away from us deployment. All of the losses of the bases once held by british and american forces would have to be recovered piecemeal. The question at this juncture was one of strategy. Chiefs of staff in dc agreed on a division of responsibilities of the us armed forces that would engage both of these two tracks. Nimitz should be assigned with a pacific fleet in hawaii in charge of the central pacific area, while macarthur would be deployed in australia, and he would cover the southern pacific. Macarthur was not very popular, but he was a hero to the american people for his supposed offense of bataan and corregidor.
