American planes are bunched together on runways so they can be easily protected from saboteurs. 6:05 am, 375 miles to the north, nagumo , commanding the first air fleet, orders 183 planes to take off. Within minutes, all 183 are airborne heading towards hawaii. As they do so, a us destroyer warship, uss ward, patrolling off the mouth of pearl harbour, spots something (a shape) trying to sneak behind a ship coming into the harbour). Japanese midget submarine (small, 3-4 man crew), one of several sent to cause a distraction . Us ward opens fire, immediately radio hq in pearl harbour, at 6:53. Officer in charge who received message thought it was a hoax. Two lieutenants identify it as a large group of planes, think it is american bombers scheduled to arrive. Several hours later, this large blip went over hawaii. In the air, also spotted by a lone private aircraft.
