Lecture 18 - popular politics and problems of the 1760. Became a symbol of freedom of speech and popular resistance to parliament in addition to political opposition. It went on from the 1760s into the 1770s and he was a radical politician who challenged the government. He was born in 1725 and the third son of a malt distiller on the outskirts of london. He attended university and was well connected in the world of the elite, and was much poorer than he wanted to be. In 1747 he married a local heiress which brought him a comfortable living which he was able to keep due to property laws, but the couple separated in 1756. He was in debt on a large scale and much of political activity was driven by principle, but also the need to restore his damaged fortune. He would arrive on a political scene that was very fractures.
