Document Summary
Lecture 16 - aspects of empire: aftermath of the seve. The seven years war ended in 1763 after enormous costs in lives and money. This time unlike the war of the austrian succession, the war really did change the world. In america, france ceded to britain substantial amounts of territory. France ceded to britain canada, cape breton and all french holdings between the alleghenies and the mississippi except new orleans. In south asia, minimal territory was given to france; east india company is the dominant european power although is still overshadowed by indian power. West indies, britain returned guadeloupe, st. lucia and martinique to france. Some argued quebec was not a good trade for guadeloupe. Prussia lost 10% of the population but emerged technically victorious; would eclipse austria as a major german state over the next 100 years. France defeated and crippled; had large war debt and lost significant territory to britain.
