Scotland needed the economic resources from england but they didn"t want the complete union with parliament because they wanted political independence for their own sovereignty. It was a more win-win scenario for both sides. Before the union there was lots of internal conflict in scotland and we see this play out after the act of the union. Colley neglects detailing the reluctance of the jacobites from scotland to join the union. Would take away scottish sovereignty and independence. After the union, great britain wasn"t the same. Scotland paid the same taxes and were included in the government but there was limited parliamentary representation. Showed how england did not want the inclusion of scotland. There were also different religious organization, education and legal system at the beginning of the 18th century showing the different values between england and scotland. Sense of reluctance from england because they felt scots were paying up to their equal taxes.
