The national party had support from other homelands governments as well as the further right. There is a conceptual showdown over how the theoretical framework should function. The national party tried to entrench its power sharing model as basic, and the anc didn"t agree. It wasn"t only the events of boipatong and goldstone that revealed the third force. They were also driven themselves about how best to handle negotiations, really when dealing with the homelands. The national party decided it needed more legitimacy, and ran a white only referendum in 1992 in which it asked for a mandate to continue negotiations. The right wing came out to argue for a no vote. This was an internal debate among whites and was watched by the world as a whole.
