In 1948, a government was elected that committed to overseeing apartheid. The nationalist party put into practice a long gestated policy of establishing what they saw as complete separate development of groups defined by race in south africa. Land was defined by which racial group is supposedly belonged to. Everyone was defined by identity and this would determine their destiny. Each groups should have their own development, should be able to develop their communities apart. This wasn"t possible because south africa was dependant on african labour. A great deal of energy was devoted to work out the contradiction, how to manage a labour presence with a country that was supposedly divided on racial lines. Despite significant resistance even within his own part and the opposition, south africa was fighting on the side of. They did not have conscription, but they sent many soldiers to fight. They sent many africans, but they were not allowed to take up arms to fight.
