There was political division in britain itself in how far to get entangled in south africa/africa itself. In 1870s and when diamonds and gold were discovered they were hesitant about if it was a good policy. Start to round up african chieftaincies and african states. They were a conquest state of different polities that were conquered in different ways and at different times.
