San inhabited south africa for thousands of years. They have the oldest dna sequence in the world. They were originally spread over much of southern africa. The term san is a word that is a khoekhoe word used from the outside to describe people without cattle. Preferred san compared to bushman used by the dutch because it had many negative connotations. Currently about 100,000 people identifying san in southern africa. Kalahari is a significant area of settlement. The san left rock art across south africa, the oldest rock art is about 70,000 years old. Tied to shamanistic practices to summon certain types of animals such as antelope. People defined by apartheid as coloured have khoekhoe heritage (as well as other ancestries, including that of diverse enslaved people)
