Aid package meant to mostly reduce drug activity. Colombia @ the time in crisis, violent death rate was huge. Massacres by army and others, kidnappings, many people displaced/fled. 100,000 deaths--last of the 19th century civil wars between libs and conservatives. La violencia (1948-1960)--200,000 deaths set off by murder of jorge eliecer gaitan in april 1948. War mostly fought in the countryside, tho urban/middle classes vulnerable to kidnapping. Social cleansing groups attacked prostitutes, drug dealers. 1958 national front accord between liberal and conservative elites--officially ended the violence of the 1950s (national front governments 1958-1974) Pact btwn parties to alternate in power for 15 yrs. Elections still held, but democ was very restricted. Farc--revolutionary armed forces of colombia, formed a political party in the mid- 1980s--the patriotic union party (up). most adherents were killed by assassins. Originates in colonization zones/defensive movements of ppl who go into northern amazon rainforest to escape govt bombings.
