Made a name for himself in army, fighting against french. Wanted to modernize mex thru liberal reforms. Pan o palo bread or the stick amigo system. Worked w those who cooperated w him, killed those who did not. Wage-labour working class, upper middle bussiness class emerging. Trad elites were the ones who benefited the most. North: mining and ranching, monterrey--early industry, yaqui indg ppl. Morelos: sugar haciendas, zapata movement emerges here.
