American society that are not written into city/state laws, but are nonetheless, real, powerful, and impacting the lives of african americans across the us. Beginning in 19th century, there"s informal segregation. Big change comes with wwi and the great migration, where african americans started moving in large numbers to industrial areas. Half a million african americans went to the north to look for jobs, there was a labour shortage due to so many people being drafted. 1919-1921 race riots: black population is growing and they"re not welcome. Blatant discrimination across labour force: african americans relegated to lowest paying jobs, no opportunities to move up, workers who cut and pack meat are from europe (wouldn"t put african.
