Queens actually ruled themselves and had their own title. In the republics of the day it was difficult for women to have a political role except for indirectly. In the world of monarch, dominated women could inherit the throne except in france. Queens did have a lot of problems when they came to the throne. People expected them to marry in order to share power because women needed men"s guidance in order to carry out things well. Having a husband was important because women were considered weak and flighty. Keep in mind gender constructs and the fundamental idea that women are weak and changeable and can"t control their passions. Women tended to be seen by men and people who were dominated very easily. Meant that the queen was giving up power a degree to a man. Marriage for a queen could have both good and bad consequences.
