Document Summary

Yugoslavia started out @ econ disadvantage due to topography, but is modernizing @ relatively rapid rate. Urban rural divide was not absolute--there was a seasonal migratory pop. Regime was certainly anti-relig, closed relig schools/cultural insts. Official islamic association worked more closely w govt, was receptive to some reforms. Relig was more of a public identity, not private ideology. Not trying to eradicate relig but tame it, prevent it from being poli force. But state praised a plurality of folk customs. So if practices could b separated from relig, they were okay. Same communist rhetoric abt communist countries equalizing genders. Women"s education, symbolic casting off of veils. Women could volunteer for non combat positions in army, many did. Women occupied relatively more party leadership positions compared to other communist countries. Domestic tourism also encouraged--many urban/industrial workers able to take first vacations. Several tourist agencies competed--unusual for communist country. Visa procedure simplified, eventually removed for many countries.
