Changes in sphere of intellectual history that was very important, major changes in 16th c. Science changed and began to emerge from natural philosophy to system including observation and experiment combined with theory. 4 fluids: blood, phlegm, black bile, white bile all produce your character and which fluid was predominate. 4 humors: blood sanguine (lively/cheerful), phlegm than phlegmatic, choleric, melancholy (scholar). Maintain balance among these humors using things like diet etc. Medical knowledge of middle ages not only on aristotle but also galen. Galen 2nd c ad greek working in roman empire (couldn"t dissect humans as against roman law), well known. Works drawn back into west in 12-13th c like. Surgery hands on occupation, empirical, not always taught in universities as little theory, but was in taught in italy. Italy coming to fore not only because good in medicine and natural philosophy, but medical course much more practical: physicians too students to besides, used herbal remedies, etc.
