HIST 325 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Erasmus, John Colet, Christian Humanism
Document Summary
Christian humanism one of the factors that brought about the reformation. Criticizing papacy and clergy, making it easier to reject. Main concerns: humanists in sense wanted to renew. Christianity, same way they wanted to renew learning returning to bible and church fathers. Wanted to use them as models for what they themselves should be. Saw early christians as truly religious life, by putting their principles into practice and actually acting on idea of loving ones self and ones neighbors, imitating christ, etc. Christian humanist thought important to present early christians as model, people in their day forgetting about meaning of christianity and how to leave a christian life. People misguided to thinking they will get into heaven by doing useless things like giving church money etc. Shift in how people should live christina life, christian humanist suggesting more personal and interior religion that doesn"t necessarily need a lot from the church.
