Rp does split several times during this era. Democrat: personal liberties, resistance to federal authority. Very high voter turnout--higher than has been seen since. Growing debates abt who could participate in politics. However, also a period of stalemate--politicians did not seem to do much. Republicans have stronger presence at national level, but democrats control a lot of local governments. During this period, no president actually won majority of popular vote. Switch to silver tariffs--import/export laws, r"s want high, d want low. But, big govt didn"t really have huge effect on people"s lives, more relevant was local govt. American literature also flourished at this time. Elected officials appointed their friends and patrons to government jobs. On the positive side, reflected the idea of the voters" mandate.
